Support a healthy water ecosystem with a native shoreline buffer. A shoreline planting does so much more than provide physical stabilization along a lakeshore or river bank. The extensive root systems embrace the soil and hold it in place, while filtering pollutants from water runoff to create a healthier shoreline habitat. The Shoreline Buffer Garden is ideal along riverbanks, small lake shoreline or pond margins. Fall plant-shipping begins on September 9, 2024. The last day to order your plants for fall shipment is September 29.
During checkout, you will be asked to choose a Shipping Week for your plant delivery, from the dates that are available. The week that you choose will be included in your order confirmation email. When your plants ship you will receive an email that includes your tracking information.
Would the Shoreline Buffer be a good choice for Northern Wisconsin, on a steep lakeshore embankment?
The Shoreline Buffer Garden is suitable for Northern Wisconsin. However, for a steep bank, you might consider adding more sedges to help stabilize the soil on the embankment.
This garden is not designed for stabilizing on a steep slope. As shown on the garden layout, this garden design is only two feet wide.
Additional sedges could help stabilze a sloped bank around a lake. Other than Fox Sedge, which is included in the Garden and does best in full sun, you could also add Palm Sedge (near the shore) or Long Beaked Sedge higher up the embankment. Bur Sedge is also an interesting shoreline sedge.
What time of year can this Pre-Planned Garden be planted - spring or fall?
Any of our Pre-planned Gardens can be succesfully planted in either, spring or fall. If you are planting in fall we recommend having the plants in the ground at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes (soil temps below 40 degrees). This is bit of a guess, as it is difficult to know when that will occur in a given year, but base your estimate on the average fall/winter in your area. There's no harm in planting earlier.

Can I substitute plants within a Pre-Planned Garden?
As a rule, we don't allow plant substitutions to be made in any of the Pre-Planned Gardens. If you are looking for more customization, our 32 and 16-Plant Custom Kits let you mix-and-match plants, with a wide variety of choices, for a great price.
Can these plants withstand frost in spring?
Yes. The plants in this garden will withstand frost in the spring. Newly transplanted plants may experience frost damage to the leaves, but the plant & roots remain alive (viable). If the frost or cold temperatures persist the plants can take some time to recover, but should continue to grow with warmer weather. If the plant foliage is damaged by frost (often it turns black or brown), remove the blackened or damaged foliage. New growth will slowly appear-most plants taking a few weeks to do so.
Most of the plants in our pre-planned gardens are hardy to zone 4, and only a few species are hardy to zone 5. Once the plants are established they are unlikely to be phased by seasonal weather.
Do you provide a recommended layout of where to plant the individual plants?
Yes, we provide a planting plan (layout) with each of our pre-planned gardens. The layout plan, visible in the product image gallery, is included in the shipment along with the plants. You can follow our planting plan, or feel free to get creative with your own arrangement!
