Crooked Stem Aster (Aster prenanthoides) prefers the light and variable shade of wood edges in medium to moist soils. It does very well in urban settings with variations in sun exposure, but does self-seed readily. The delicate lavender-blue flowers offer excellent fall color and a lovely rounded form, blooming from late summer through early autumn on branching stems, one to three feet tall. Mix with ferns and spring blooming flowers for season-long interest in light shade or full sun. This Aster is attractive to numerous fall pollinators, and is a host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly and the Wavy-Lined Emerald moth.
