Red Twig Dogwood, also known as Red Osier Dogwood, is a beautiful shrub in all seasons. Numerous white flower clusters appear in late spring, giving way to lovely white berries in late summer. The fruits are attractive, ornamental, and popular with birds, as well. Red leaves provide autumn color, and the show continues through winter when the dramatic red stems are a striking point of interest. The tendency to spread and form thickets makes this dogwood an excellent choice for privacy screening. Very moisture tolerant. Red Twig Dogwood is one of several host plants for the Crecopia silkmoth and the Spring and Summer Azure butterflies.
Native plants can be grown outside of their native range in the appropriate growing conditions. This map shows the native range, as well as the introduced range, of this species.

Does this plant require 2-3 shrubs for pollination in order to get reliable fruit production?
We didn't mention the "realiable fruit production" status with this shrub for a couple of reasons. 1. fruit production is not usually a concern with Red Twig. 2. Red Twig Dogwood does require cross pollination, but it will set some fruit without the additional plant. It will be more fruitful with additional shrubs. 3. Just One additional shrub would be sufficient, but you might get more increase in fruit by adding another Red Twig from a different source. 4. RedTwig Dogwood is fairly common in the landscape. That is one reason why it will set fruit without an additional shrub. Check nearby your location for other Cornus sericea in the vacinity.

How far will the suckers show up from the original planting location? I want to plant dogwood as a hedge by the fence and am afraid the suckers would show up on neighbor's property.
Suckers from shrubs such as dogwood are typically be no more than 2-3 feet from the outer edge of the base. The base will also expand with age. Fully mature red twig dogwood, will be around 8 ft high and 6 wide, so if you are planting near a fence, a good distance from the fence would be at least 3 feet from the fence. Hard pruning will increase the suckering, so don't perform hard pruning every year. Allow newly planted shrubs to grow for a few years before pruning. If they are well-sited they probably will not sucker in the first few years, but will simply become established. Another factor which may affect suckering at your location: the suckers are more likely to appear on the side that favors their growth. They may appear mostly on your side of the fence if the fence block some of the sunlight for a good portion of the day. However, if the soil is more wet in your neighbors yard the suckers might be inclined to head toward the moisture.

Is this shrub deer resistant?
This shrub is not deer resistant.
If you live in an area where deer are present, we recommend protecting any newly installed shrubs by surrounding them with a wire fencing cage, or a plastic netting to protect them from being browsed by deer and/or rabbits. Food sources can be scarce in the winter, and young shrubs are choice when when there are no tender perennials available. If you live in an urban area where there are no deer, you may have rabbits in your yard. Rabbits also browse young, newly planted shrubs when other plants are not available.
