Cardinal Flower blooms for a month or more in late summer, with brilliant red flowers that are sure to bring hummingbirds to the garden. Occurring naturally in wetlands, Cardinal Flower grows best in moist soils in full sun or light shade. A short-lived species, the parent plant will persist for a few years, but this prolific seeder can self-sow in the right conditions with good seed-to-soil contact. Otherwise, it may require replanting every few years, but is well worth the effort.
Native plants can be grown outside of their native range in the appropriate growing conditions. This map shows the native range, as well as the introduced range, of this species.

Does Cardinal Flower spreads via seeds only, and not through its roots?
Cardinal Flower does not spread through its root system, which is a fibrous clump. It will self-seed, which is usually welcome with this plant. Good soil moisture and open (bare) soil are important for natural seed germination. The small seeds need good contact with the ground (seed-to-soil contact) in order to germinate successfully. Avoid a thick layer of shaved wood mulch or similar if you want the plants to reseed, as it can inhibit the seed from making contact with the ground.
