Spinulose Wood Fern has a few different common names, including toothed wood fern, shield fern or narrow buckler fern. Two to three feet high at maturity, this fern is vase shaped with long, intricate fronds that offer stand-out texture in the woodland/shade garden. Shelter from the wind is a good idea, as the lacy fronds are susceptible to tearing. The fall color is golden yellow, eventually turning rusty orange.

Most often found growing naturally in wet wooded areas, it grows just as well in medium or moist soils, especially soils with some loam and humus. It will not do well in clay soils, as an acidic soil with organic matter is prefered.  Full shade is very well tolerated, and it grows under pine trees with consistently moist soil. Spinulose Wood Fern is both deer and rabbit resistant.

Over time, this clump-forming fern spreads by rhizomes to form large colonies.
