A member of the moist prairie community, Prairie Dock is a unique towering plant with flowering stalks that arise from a large cluster of broad basal leaves. The sunflower-like blooms last for a month or longer in mid-to-late summer. Once they’ve become established the plants are drought tolerant and long-lived. Individual plants can flourish for decades. The large size and deep taproot make the plant difficult to move, so choose the site carefully in a garden setting. Birds love the seeds.
Native plants can be grown outside of their native range in the appropriate growing conditions. This map shows the native range, as well as the introduced range, of this species.

Hi there! The Prairie Dock that I planted is on its third summer, grows copious large leaves, and looks quite healthy among golden rod and milkweed. It has yet to flower though. Is it common for them to take a few years getting established before flowering?
Your three year old Prairie Dock plant should send up stalk shoots this summer, so keep an eye out for their emergence in midsummer. If they don't appear this year they will eventually. Prairie Dock is slow to develop and two to three years until the first flowering is not unusual.
