The pure white flowers of Boneset stand-out in the late summer landscape and look great combined with the pink wands of Dense Blazingstar. A large perennial wildflower, Eupatorium perfoliatum is closely related to the Joe-Pye-weeds, and will occasionally grow up to 6 feet, but is typically around 4 feet tall. The highly textured, lance-shaped leaves clasp the stem, and were once believed to facilitate the setting and healing of bones. Boneset prefers soil rich soil that remains consistently moist. It will tolerate some shade but does best in full sun.
Host plant for the Spring Azure butterfly, the Boneset Borer, and Three-lined flower moth.
Native plants can be grown outside of their native range in the appropriate growing conditions. This map shows the native range, as well as the introduced range, of this species.

When is the optimum time to plant this perennial in Zone 5? If planted in summer, will they survive until the winter?
Boneset can be planted successfully anytime from early spring thru early fall. As a late-season bloomer the "optimal" time would probably be spring. Boneset is a very hardy native. Whether planted in spring, summer or fall, the plant can survive the winter. If planted in the summer, make sure the plants get plenty of water. Boneset strongly prefers a moist setting, as noted on our website (Soil Moisture : Medium, Moist, Wet). When planting in the fall it is important to install plants at least 6 week before the ground freezes, as plants need time to root-in to the soil.
