Crooked Stem Aster prefers the light and variable shade of wood edges in medium to moist soils. It does very well in urban settings with variations in sun exposure, but does self-seed readily. The delicate lavender-blue flowers offer excellent fall color and bloom from late summer through early autumn. Multiple branching stems create a lovely rounded form, around two to three feet tall. Combine this adaptable aster with ferns and spring blooming flowers for season-long interest in light shade or full sun. Attractive to numerous fall pollinators, Crooked Stem Aster is a host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly and the Wavy-Lined Emerald moth.
