Annual rye is a widely used nurse crop for prairie seedings. Planted with your prairie seed in spring or fall, it will reduce weed growth, prevent soil erosion and provide shade for young prairie seedlings. If an erosion blanket is used, Annual Rye is not required. In Zone 4 and colder, Annual Rye will usually winter-kill, except in mild winters. In Zone 5 and warmer, Annual Rye will typically survive the winter and will require mowing the following spring and summer.

Lolium multiflorum is not a native grass, but is a widespread grass found across much of the temperate world.
