Aptly named, Showy Sunflower (Helianthus laetiflorus) is one of the largest and showiest of the native sunflowers. The high contrast between the bright yellow petals and dark centers give this sunflower a distinctive appearance. Helianthus laetiflorus blooms late in the summer and the seeds ripen just in time for migrating birds to gorge on them as they make their long journey south. Growing three to six feet tall, it spreads rapidly by rhizomes, so give this plant some room. Plant in patches for best effect.
