Sullivant's Milkweed is a long-lived perennial and a well-behaved relative of the Common Milkweed. Very similar in looks, several features distinguish them: Sullivant's Milkweed is less aggressive, and creeps slowly from deep rhizomes; and Sullivant's is completely smooth with leaves that are more succulent-like. (Common Milkweed and others have fuzzy leaves, stems or pods.) This gorgeous prairie plant is one of the very best for attracting butterflies, especially Monarchs. It is visited by hummingbirds and a variety of bees and butterflies as well.

Asclepias sullivantii is a fine addition to any sunny, medium to medium-moist perennial garden and a superior candidate for the butterfly garden. The structural shape and bold texture help it stand out in the border garden. Or, include it in a naturalized planting with other prairie flowers such as Wild Quinine, Meadow Blazingstar and Culver's Root.

At one time the tallgrass prairie was its primary habitat, but very little of the original prairie remains. Sullivant's Milkweed is listed as 'threatened' in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan. It fares better in other areas but its future is still linked to the fate of native prairies.

Also known as: Prairie Milkweed, Smooth Milkweed
Native habitat: Prairie, meadow, field, wet meadow, river bottomland
Of note: All plants in the genus Asclepias are somewhat toxic to both humans and animals. Some can be fatally so if consumed in large quantities, due to cardiac glycoside content. The sap may cause skin irritation.
