A rounded upright growth form makes this popular Viburnum both attractive when planted individually or grouped for a tall hedge or screen. Flat topped white flower clusters bloom in spring, giving way to yellow berries that darken to blue-black. The berries are desirable to birds and mammals alike, and can be used in preserves. Generally multi-stemmed, Blackhaw has dark green, finely toothed foliage that turns red-purple in autumn. Tolerant to black walnut.

Early spring blooms provide excellent pollinator support. Viburnums flower profusely whether or not pollination occurs. However, poor fruiting will happen if there is only one Viburnum available. The "perfect" flowers - having both male and femaie parts - are self-infertile and cross pollination is needed for reliable fruit production. Two or three shrubs are recommended for ample fruiting.
