Sky Blue Aster is a bright and showy addition to any perennial garden. Leaves at the base of the plant are somewhat heart-shaped and become much smaller in size as they move up the stem. The multi-branching stems are topped with a flurry of blue-lavender flowers with yellow centers. Plentiful blooms from late August into October look great with Showy Goldenrod for a fabulous fall show. At 1’-3’ tall this medium sized aster is very similar in appearance to Smooth Aster, but Sky Blue Aster has rough leaves, while Smooth Aster has smooth leaves.

Found along open wood margins and in open prairies, Sky Blue Aster prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade. Thriving in a variety of soils as long as it is well-drained, this is a popular, non-aggressive aster for natural meadow designs, rock gardens or the perennial border.

An important nectar and pollen source for fall pollinators, asters attract numerous bees and butterflies. Sky Blue aster is a host plant for the Pearl Crescent butterfly and the Wavy-Lined Emerald moth.
