In our time, the Monarch butterfly population has plummeted due to habitat loss and environmental stress. Awareness the Monarch’s plight has motivated gardeners and landscapers around the country to make a difference by including Monarch-friendly plants in their plans.
Native plants offer the best support for Monarchs. The adult female Monarch lays her eggs exclusively on plants in the Asclepias genus, known as milkweeds, and the caterpillars that hatch feed exclusively on the leaves of milkweeds. Adults Monarchs also require a variety of other plants for the nectar they offer – native plants that bloom from early summer to late fall. Our "Monarch Favorites" list includes plants that support the Monarch life cycle with host plants as well as their favorite nectar plants. Pre-planned Monarch Habitat Gardens and Monarch Habitat Seed Mixes are also included.
