Blue Vervain is a moisture-loving plant typically found in moist meadows and along streams. The deep blue-violet flower spikes are a highlight of the midsummer meadow, and remain blooming for up to 2 months. Individual plants are biennial, but may colonize slowly by rhizomes from the fibrous root system to create a perennial presence, in ideal conditions.
Standing water is not tolerated, however, irregular or seasonal inundation is just fine. Plant Blue Vervain with other moisture-loving species around pond margins, or other damp areas for a burst of late-summer color. This very hardy species should have full sun.
Verbena hastata is a host plant for caterpillars of the Common Buckeye, Junonia coenia.
