The Karner Blue is an exquisite small blue butterfly of the upper midwest. Added to the endangered species list in 1992, the Karner Blue (Lycaeides melissa samuelisis) continues to struggle for existence due to loss of habitat within its range. This garden contains Wild Lupine, the obligate host plant of the caterpillar, plus many favorite nectar plants of the adult butterfly. Plant this garden to create season-long beauty and habitat for this rare Lepidopteran and other butterflies as well! Recommended for planting only on dry sandy soils within the butterfly's known range, which includes areas of IL, IN, MI, MN, NH, NY, OH and WI.
