A beloved spring ephemeral, Trout Lily's maroon-mottled leaves give rise to slender stalks bearing nodding yellow flowers. Trout lily should be planted where it will receive the warmth of the sun in early spring. Cover with leafy material over winter and leave it through spring. Plants can form large thick colonies on rich medium to moist soil. When the plants include many leaves and few flowers the clumps should be divided. Also known as Dogtooth Violet, it is a true lily. Zones 3-8.
