Western Sunflower has elegant star-like flowers held aloft on leafless stalks two to three feet tall. The shortest of our native sunflowers, Helianthus occidentalis is perfect for dry meadows and small prairie gardens. Blooming for an extended period in late summer, the seeds that follow attract migrating Birds.
The Silvery checkerspot, and Gorgone Checkerspot butterflies use Sunflowers as host plants. Various small moths are known utilize this sunflower, as well.
