Red Milkweed is very popular with pollinators. Hawk moths, Swallowtail butterflies, Greater Fritillaries, Monarch butterflies, skippers, bumble bees and numerous other nectar-seekers will visit this plant - even an occasional hummingbird. The leaves are a preferred food source for caterpillars of both the Monarch and Queen butterflies.

Asclepias incarnata is easily grown in moist to wet soils in full sun, but it also does perfectly well in average, well-drained garden sites. The 3'-5' plants form stately clumps with upright stems and long narrow leaves. The clusters of fragrant pink flowers are followed by attractive seed pods for late season interest. The pods split open when ripe releasing silky-haired seeds, easily carried by the wind.

A beautiful addition to sunny border gardens, water features, or the butterfly garden, Red Milkweed is also a good for naturalizing in low spots or other moist areas in the landscape.

Native habitat: Wetland edges, marshes, meadows and fields, margins of lakes, ponds, shores of rivers
Also of interest: The genus name, Asclepias, honours the Greek god of medicine Asklepios.
