Fastest growing of the prairie grasses, this makes an excellent native nurse crop for prairie seedings. Seeded at a rate of two to three pounds per acre with a prairie seed mix, it matures in the first or second year while other prairie grasses and flowers are still developing. The beautiful curving seedheads resemble cultivated rye. Grows on practically any soil, including bare sand, gravel and raw clay subsoil. Hardy to Zone 3.
