Prairie Nursery Landscape
Designer Jennifer Baker has created a 20’ x 30’ living prairie for
the 2008 Lake Home and Cabin Show in Madison. Composed of some 1,440
plants, the feature includes a footpath that winds through native
wildflowers and grasses which are typically found within upland prairie,
moist meadow and savanna ecosystems.
This indoor garden will provide attendees with an
opportunity to view a myriad of flowers blooming amid gently waving
grasses and bestow a sense of familiarity with an increasingly popular
type of low-maintenance landscaping.
Ms. Baker’s design incorporates
native species such as prairie smoke, smooth aster and big bluestem,
once common in the upper Midwest but ever declining in our modern world
of mowed ditches, paved roads and urban sprawl. The plants showcased
within this design are especially beneficial to a diversity of bird and
butterfly life, which are also experiencing significant population
declines as their prairie habitat disappears.
Prairie
Nursery’s Plant Division Manager Betty Bless and her staff have
accepted the challenge of encouraging these natives to grow and bloom
outside their normal seasons, so plants that bloom during the spring,
summer and fall will display their hues of crimson, lavender and gold in
unison.
This will be a rare opportunity
for folks who are curious about landscaping with native plants as an
alternative to a labor-intensive and energy-consuming lawn.
Make sure you attend Prairie
Nursery President Neil Diboll’s presentation Saturday, on landscaping with
native species. A well known speaker among native landscaping
enthusiasts, Neil presents topics that both amuse and enlighten
listeners. In addition to fielding questions after his talks, Mr.
Diboll and Ms. Baker will be available in the Prairie Nursery booth
adjacent to the “Living Prairie” to discuss your site specific questions
and landscape design needs.
And please stop by and say hi. You may ask questions about your unique
landscape. Plus, we'll have many potted plants, seeds and seed mixes
available. Our booth is adjacent to the
Living Prairie.
